Au Pair in Scotland

Scottish Flag

DUTIES AND BENEFITS

The typical Scottish au pair is an individual between the ages of 18-30 years old. Au pairs will be expected to help with the childcare and with light domestic tasks. Au pairs would normally be expected to work 5 days a week, 25 to 35 hours per week. This can also include 2 nights’ baby sitting per week. The current rate of pay starts at approximately £70 per week in most parts of the country.

Working hours of between 35 hours/week are classed as an ‘au pair plus’, and attract a weekly starting rate of approximately £90 per week, depending on the level of responsibility. Usually au pairs work from Monday to Friday with weekends off. Au pairs receive their own rooms and meals.

AFTER YOU ARRIVE

Our Scotland partner agency will also play a part by calling shortly after the au pair’s arrival, to find out how things are going, and by being available throughout the au pair’s placement to discuss any issues that might arise, no matter how minor they might seem. An emergency phone number will also be provided. The aim is to assist Au Pairs in adapting to living and working in the UK.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

The au pair is responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel arrangements to reach the nearest airport/station/bus station to the host family.

HOLIDAYS

These should be discussed at the start of the au pair’s stay. If a host family wishes the au pair to stay for Christmas and/or Easter this would be made clear at the time of making an offer of placement. If the au pair is not accompanying the family when they go on holiday it is the host family’s responsibility to make satisfactory arrangements for his/her welfare and safety. An au pair should receive one week’s holiday for each six months of stay.
